Basically…. Luminance.

Photometric brightness is an old and deprecated term for luminance. (Term of photometry)

The physical measure of brightness. Luminous intensity per unit projected area of any surface, as measured from a specific direction.

Luminance (usually ‘L’ in formulas) is the amount of visible light leaving a point on a surface in a given direction. This “surface” can be a physical surface or an imaginary plane, and the light leaving the surface can be due to reflection, transmission, and/or emission

Standard unit of luminance is candela per square meter (cd/m2).
(also called Nits in the USA, from Latin “nitere” = “to shine”).

There are several older units of luminance:

Apostilb (deprecated) 1 asb = 1/pi cd/m2
Blondel (deprecated) 1 blondel = 1/pi cd/m2
Candela per square foot 1 cd/ft2 = 10.764 cd/m2
Candela per square inch 1 cd/in2 = 1550 cd/m2
Footlambert (deprecated) 1 fL = 3.426 cd/m2
Lambert (deprecated) 1 L = 104/pi cd/m2

Typical luminance values are:

Regular color LCDs are not bright enough to ensure complete image clarity under direct sunlight conditions.

Many of our products are significantly brighter than standard off-the-shelf LCDs making our products ideally suited for use in any lighting environment. We build products to maximize brightness at the lowest possible power consumption. These “actively” enhanced panels offer a “white” color tone that closely matches normal sunlight and provides a crisp image in any lighting condition. A wide dimming range provides various levels of screen brightness, up to almost 2000 nits!!!

Other VarTech “sunlight” readable products take a different “passive” approach. Utilizing advanced proprietary optical bonding technology; we overcome optical challenges for the LCD user, at an affordable price. In a wide assortment of applications, standard LCD displays in high ambient lighting conditions appear to be “washed out” due to excessive reflection of ambient light. Commercially available LCDs, especially when protected by a separate cover glass or plastic shield, do not deliver enough brightness to make the display functional in outdoors or in other high ambient light applications. Our unique process results in a reduction of ambient light reflections compared to other display enhancement technologies, at an affordable price.

We seal either a top cover glass or touch screen directly to the face of the display. Our bonding process eliminates the air-gap between the display and the cover glass, vastly reducing reflective light, which causes visual washout of the display image. It also enhances structural integrity by supporting the LCD cell with the cover glass. The bond provides shock protection, and eliminates fogging caused by trapped moisture in the air-gap. 

  • It provides the best reduction of ambient light washout of any commercially available technology 
  • It has a lower cost than most other competing technologies 
  • It offers superior ruggedization, enhancing the display durability caused by vibration, shock and other environmental extreme.

So, just because an LCD panel offers above normal brightness (example 750-1000 nits cd/m²), does NOT mean it can be adequately viewed under direct sunlight conditions.

As we offer several levels of service programs it usually depends on the type of program chosen.

For instance, totally rebuilding the monitor will take approximately 5-7 days, while basic repair usually takes about 2-3 days.

Slow Scan is a relatively new description used to differentiate Legacy Monitors from more modern high resolution (high scan rate ) types.

Basically any monitor operating below VGA standard ( 31.5kHz Horizontal Scan Rate ) can be classified as slow scan. Slow Scan signals are invariably non-standard in terms of synch pulse widths, polarities and active video times as no international standards existed when the original control systems were conceived.

VarTech has a range of ruggedized industrial-grade CRT and LCD Monitors operating in the range 15-40+kHz ( giving Slow Scan + VGA/SVGA performance ). They are available in Desktop, rack mount, panel mount, console mount or open-frame chassis formats for Analogue or TTL level video inputs. Autoscanning and Auto-recognition of input signals are key features.

We also offer a unique range of Slow Scan LCD Monitors which on one hand, solve Legacy problems in the 15-30kHz range, and on the other provide an upgrade path to SXGA resolutions – all in the same monitor!
