What is Optical Bonding?
Optical bonding is the process by which a layer of light reflecting silicone is applied between the front cover glass and the front face of the TFT LCD panel. This creates an optical grade solid laminate that increases the display’s contrast ratio by reducing reflected ambient light. Additional benefits gained from optical bonding include increased ruggedness and over-all durability, reduction of heat to the unit, and increased moisture protection by elimination of the air gap between the front cover glass (or touch screen) and the front face of the LCD.

Vartech’s optical bonding and film stack are used to optimized and reduce light reflection, which makes the display appear brighter in high bright light environments. The increase in relative illumination paired with industrial grade high-bright backlight LED’s makes for a very readable display in direct sunlight environments.
How are VarTech’s film stacks and optical bonding optimized for sunlight readable displays?
When light travels through a constant medium it maintains many stable characteristics. However, when light transitions from one medium to another it will either reflect, refract, or experience total internal reflection. When transitioning from one medium to another, the velocity of light changes while frequency remains constant, thus wavelength must change to preserve the fundamental wave equation (w=v/f). This subsequent change in wavelength is responsible for how much light is reflected or refracted through the glass then reflected towards the user of the display. By using filters and materials with known indexes of refraction, we can control the behavior of light that would otherwise interfere with the user’s experience.
