Optical Bonding and Dynamic LED Enhancements for Displays

What is optical bonding?

Optical bonding is a method used to enhance the quality and physical strength of an LCD display. It’s the process of filling the air gap between the LCD and glass with an adhesive or resin, such as silicone. Once cured, the silicone adds multiple benefits to the bonded display such as light refraction (from both LCD backlight and outside light), durability against vibration, water, and dust resistant, improved touchscreen accuracy, and prevents fog and condensation in humid environments.

What are the types of optical bonding?

There are three types of adhesives used in optical bonding. Those types are silicone, epoxy, and polyurethane.

What are some applications that require optical bonding?

Optical bonding applications specific to Vartech customers include, but not limited to petroleum industry (oil rigs), marine use (yachts and US Coast Guard), aircraft, railroads, and bus stations.

Reflection with VBOND and AR Coating

The image above is representative of the reflection loss experienced by an LCD without an optical bond layer between the LCD enhancement and an AR coating on the display glass of the LCD.

Reflection with no VBOND

This image is representative of the greatly improved reflection loss experienced when an optical bond is applied between the face of the LCD and the LCD enhancement.
